Meteora is a unique geological phenomenon that was formed millions of years ago. The enormous columns of rock host a complex of orthodox monasteries, with six of them still functioning. Although hermits settled there in caves from the 11th century, the first monastery wasn’t built until the 14th century. Once, the access was possible only via series of ladders tied together or by pulling someone with a large net. According to the monks, the ropes up to Meteora were only replaced when the Lord let them break. Nowadays there are staircases and pathways cut into the rock formations. Meteora, meaning suspended in the air, is listed on UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
