The Acropolis and its monuments are universally the ultimate cultural symbols of the classical spirit and civilization therefore the greatest heritage bequeathed by the Greek Antiquity to the world. In the second half of the fifth century BC, Athens celebrates the significant victory over the Persians and establishes democracy, achieving a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world. In the years that follow, culture flourish and the ambitious Athenian statesman Pericles coordinates a unique group of artists to transform the rocky hill into the exceptional monument also called the “Sacred Rock”. The Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike are the greatest monuments built on it during that time.

Temple of Poseidon (duration 45′ – 60′) Second stop

The Temple of Poseidon, dedicated to the ancient Greek god of the sea, that was built between 444 and 440 B.C., constitutes another major monument and achievement of Athens. By that time the powerful city of Athens spreads culture all over the world. The doric temple was built from local marble of the Agrileza quarries on top of a destroyed archaic temple and standing almost 60 metres above the sea level. Chiseled into the base of one of the sixteen remaining columns of the Temple of Poseidon is the name of Lord Byron, who mentions Sounion in one of his poems. The temple closely resembles the Temple of Hephaestus, which may have been designed by the same architect.

Vouliagmeni’s Lake (duration 15′) Third stop

Lake Vouliagmeni is a beautiful natural lake, where fresh spring water meets with warm seawater. As a result, there is warm water all the year, so the temperature never drops below 18 °C. Because of its constant warm water temperature and its rich content inhydrogen sulphide, the lake functions as a spa since the end of the 19th century.
